The Local Designer Watch.

They were on glossies, huge posters, blogs and newspapers. You name the publication, they’ve been there (most of them anyway). The duo created a huge wave in the fashion industry with the previous collection, dysfunction and now they’re back with their next collection, Birth Defects. Don’t worry, children were not harmed in the making of the collection. They may use highly intimidating & off-putting names/titles but they’ve still managed to appeal to a huge crowd.
Instead, the designers, Kenny and Andrew, aim to distort the common approach to fashion, breaking trends and reverting traditions along the way. With their upside down dress, too many pockets shirt and even a balloon shirt, this is reconstruction of purpose and practicality. For superheroes wannabes, there’s also a Superhero shirt that has an attached cape, which can very neatly be hidden in an open slit back.
It would be very interesting to see what more these two guys can come up with in the near future, as their intents to go far from the norm in monotonous tones will at the very least be an experiment in how creative one can be in these strange days.

Max Tan’s design vision is synonymous with his identity. Maximizing on small ideas as he so aptly puts it. A man of relatively small stature but yet manages to escalate his ideas and his label. Word play at its best here?
Max Tan’s creates pieces that are constructed in non-traditional manner. He takes a simple rectangular piece of cloth and builds it in such a way that it falls and creates the lapels of a jacket.
Every collection holds a deeper meaning, a meaning that draws you in and keeps you captivated with his pieces (not in a scary way). I’ve enjoyed looking at his collections and meeting him at Blueprint was the cherry on top of that cupcake. I would wager that he has another way of putting that cherry too.

Mae Pang is a fashion maestro when it comes to mixing fabrics. Whimsical at moments and radical at times, Mae Pang appeals to a wide variety of tastes. She uses fundamental lines and shapes which are buckled with masculine-inspired angles, but yet maintaining a feminine aesthetic with her collection
She doesn’t stick to an all black palette, instead she opts to mix it up with bold and mild colours creating unique garments that are both in tuned with the fairer sex and at the spearhead of the fashion world.

Simplicity and complexity are words from the two extreme ends of a spectrum. For Eve Tan, they aren’t. She impressively incorporates both nouns into a single garment. Simplicity in the form and the flow of the pieces and complexity in its detailing. Taking a simple long black dress and incorporating knitting on the back of the dress, effectively making knit the next sexy trend in the industry.

Eve creates apparels that can be easily dressed up or down which is perfect in this climate of ours that changes impulsively. The label also aims to form a balance between style and comfort, believing that style comes naturally as long as one is comfortable in their outfit.

The sudden rise in fashion designers bursting into the scene has left many of us in a flurry. In a city this small, fashion designers are constantly faced with the struggle to rise above the others in terms of exclusivity, creativity and design. Those who do find a perfect balance are the ones who are in it for the long run.
I personally see potential in the above 5 designers. The designers genuinely show a hunger to produce appealing apparels worthy for the wearer and worthy for their price points. There might be other creative designers that I’m not aware of, but what do you think? Are the above 5 designers also your favourites, or are there others? If you could come up with a top 5 local designer list, who would be in it?
